[Matty]

it is…

tranquility
his head against your shoulder
moonlit glassy sea
peaceful in the knowledge that in him you have found
something more valuable than normalcy –
yourself

power
giving you the strength
to stay with him – watching him suffer
(infinitely harder than suffering yourself)
and simply by being there
showing him that he will never be alone

exhilaration
joydesireraptureblissheaven
opening up a new world for him and discovering yourself you’ve never been there before
a high more pure and perfect than any you’ve ever known
and letting him teach you to embrace the darkness – realizing that night
is brilliant, a vast expanse of possibility

sacrifice
staying by his side
(though every fiber of your being
screams for you to run away)
leaving your home and family and the ocean you love
to watch him die – in your arms

invincibility
that knowing,
more certainly than you’ve ever known anything,
that you are young, and in love, and nothing
not even death
could take any of this away.

[Zeke]

it is…

passion
getting drunk on martinis and a pair of calm green eyes
the tide crashing on the shore below you
a full moon and the stars glittering into infinity
enhancing, but unable to rival the dizzying electrifying ecstasy
of fingers resting lightly against the small of your back

power
giving you the strength
to battle for life –
so full of vitality, despite the hurt
and by the simple act of living
showing him how to do the same

freedom
turning obstacles into adventure
being able to give yourself to him, wholly, body and soul
letting him take you places you never dreamed possible
making the darkness your own – realizing that night
is brilliant, a vast expanse of possibility

sacrifice
pushing him away
(though every fiber of your being
screams for him to hold you)
facing, though you fear it most, death alone
to try and spare him this pain

invincibility
that knowing,
more certainly than you’ve ever known anything,
that you are young, and in love, and nothing
not even death
could take any of this away.

Author's Comments

These two poems were a wedding present, of sorts, for a couple friends of mine, though they never were legally married, being gay and underage. Oh well. They probably make more sense if you knew the kids, but the short of it is that Zeke was terminally ill and Matty was -- er, Matty. He had a whole lot of problems with drugs and badness and just generally hating the world and not being able to deal with people, that Zeke helped him get over. Also, they were awesome.

So, poems. They were, as I said, presents. I gave the one about Zeke to Matty, and the one about Matty to Zeke.
